Quit Smoking this New Year? Your Back Health May Benefit!

We’re almost three months into the New Year and by now some of you may be reaping the benefits of those New Year’s Resolutions you made. If the 1st January saw you “stubbing out” your smoking habit, then a big “well done!” from all of us here at our London chiropractic clinic. It may not be as well known as some of the other health risks, but smoking can make people more prone to back and spine conditions.

Nicotine, which is the addictive substance in cigarettes, can hinder the natural flow of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood cells to the protective discs of the spine. Because these discs are meant to act as cushions or shock absorbers, it is thought that smoking can accelerate disc degeneration. Smoking also reduces calcium absorption and prevents new bone growth, which can increase the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

But quitting smoking doesn’t just help to prevent illness and disease, being smoke-free can also give your body a better chance of healing and recovering.

So well done and keep going! The health benefits will be worth it!
