How Swimming Can Help Back Problems

There’s no better escape from the summer heat than taking a refreshing dip in the pool. And according to our London chiropractor, swimming can play a major role in reducing back pain.  As a low impact exercise, swimming is one of the easiest activities on the back and spine, having practically no impact on the spinal structures! In fact, the buoyancy of the water supports the body; relieving joint stress as a result.

If you’re thinking of hitting the pool this summer, our chiropractor recommends the following to further help your back:

  • Use the correct forms for front strokes such as front crawl or breast stroke. When you’re swimming, remember to hold your lower abdominal muscles in and keep your head straight (rather than lifted).
  • Wear goggles to lower the risk of moving your head incorrectly when trying to keep water out of your eyes.
  • Roll your body to the side and tuck your chin in when taking breaths during front crawl.

Here’s to a happy, pain-free summer!
